Use a slide layout
Do this first. The question then sits in a layout made for it.
- Under the slide list, choose Add slide.
- The dialog title is Choose a layout. The field says Search layouts…
- Choose Interactive Question Slide.
- If the question should sit next to an image, choose Interactive Question Slide with Image instead.
- If you do not see that layout, choose Show all layouts. Under that card you see Browse everything in a dedicated view.
- The slide is added. On it you see Click to add question and Insert interactive question here.
- Click Click to add question. The Questions panel opens. Its title is Interactive questions.
Then follow the steps below to add this question type.
Steps
- Open the presentation in the editor.
- Choose Questions. A panel opens. Its title is Interactive questions.
- Open Activities, then choose Fill in the blanks.
- It appears on the slide you are on. You do not press Save.
- Click the question on the slide. It starts as Ask your question here... Type your own question.
- Open Text with blanks. The text starts as Roses are [red], violets are [blue]. The sun is {[yellow, blue, pink]}. Under the heading it says Use brackets to mark blanks for the audience.
- Write your own sentence. Put each blank in brackets. The sidebar shows four ways to write one.
What you see
The sentence sits on the slide, with gaps where the brackets were. When you present live, you see the words people typed.
What participants do
On their own device, they fill each gap. A blank written as a list in curly brackets is a choice. They pick one of those words.
When to use it
Use Fill in the blanks when you want people to recall a word, not pick it from a list you already showed. Choose words that carry the meaning of the sentence.
You can accept more than one right word in the same blank. Afterward, use the word in a new sentence so people apply it, not only remember it.
Settings
Open Answers. These lines show how a blank is written.
Open: [Answer] People type the word. More than one word can count: Several answers: [Answer 1, Answer 2] A choice looks like Multiple choice: {[Correct, Wrong, Wrong]} The first word is the correct one. A blank with nothing in it, No correct answer: [], is collected and not marked right or wrong.
Open Grading. Respondents need to fill every blank is selected. Every blank needs a word before they can send. Switch to Allow sending with blanks empty if a partly filled sentence is enough.
Ignore small errors is on. The line under it says Frequent typos, like accent marks and upper/lower cases, will not be penalized. Turn it off if the spelling has to match exactly.
Under Show answers, a new Fill in the blanks question uses Show answers after a click. The result stays hidden until you click. Switch to Show answers immediately if you want it to appear while people are still answering.
Time limit is off. People can answer for as long as the question stays open. Turn it on to close answers after 10 seconds, 20 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, or 2 minutes.
Participants can edit their answers is on. A person can change what they already sent. Turn it off if you want the first answer to stay.
If it does not work
A slide can hold one interactive question. If it already has one, you see One question per slide. The message says Only one interactive question per slide is allowed. Choose Cancel to stay on this slide, or Add to new slide to place the Fill in the blanks question on a new slide.
